A little forward thinking goes a long way when preventing an emergency, however the unexpected does happen from time to time. With everything from civil unrest, crime, and imprisonment to natural disasters, accidents, and health issues, you might not be able to predict what will happen, but you can absolutely plan what you will do in response to an emergency situation, should it arise.

Vicki Moses, travel insurance expert at Medical Travel Compared states: "Holidays are about relaxation and enjoyment so if an emergency does arise when you're abroad it is important to know what to do so that it can be dealt with as quickly and easy as possible."

Here are a few things to think about.

Be prepared

Preparation is key, particularly for those with a pre-existing medical condition. It's important that you try to read as much travel advise as possible on the region you are travelling to before you set off on your journey. Use trusted sources such as or the ABI to ensure that you're well prepared for any eventuality and understand the steps required to claim on your travel insurance once you return home. "Securing comprehensive travel insurance with adequate cover for medical treatment, repatriation, lost luggage, and travel delays should be the first on your list of preparations." Vicki explained.

Get emergency assistance

Your insurance provider should always have an emergency assistance phone number on hand so you can contact them if a life threatening situation arises whilst you are abroad. If you are given a number, always ensure you have it saved on your mobile phone, that way you can make sure it is on your person at all times.

Sign up to 'LOCATE'

You can sign up to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office 'LOCATE' service, as this is a useful system which holds details of your travel arrangements, enabling you to be located more easily should an emergency situation occur. This simple online system allows you to quickly and easily update your travel arrangements.

Vicki also suggests taking copies of your passport and any other travel documents you may have, stating: "You can refer to them if the originals are lost or stolen". She also points out the importance of having easy access to separate emergency funds in case you find yourself in a situation without cash.

Always keep receipts

Evidence of any expenditure will be required by your travel insurance provider in order for you to make a claim, therefore it is imperative that you always hold onto any medical receipts you may have obtained after being involved in an injury. "If you're a victim of theft, obtain a police report within 24 hours of the incident occurring or if your luggage is lost, stolen or damaged at the airport, obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) for your airline."

Use The British Consular Assistance Team

When travelling it's a good idea to always keep the number of the The British Consular Assistance Team easily available. The Consular service is always on hand to provide assistance for everything from lost passports to keeping you in close contact with friends and family following an incident. The number should be kept on your person at all times (+44 20 27008 1500), hopefully you will never be in a situation that requires you to have it, but if you are, you won't regret it.
